Safety moment, September 28

Know where the kit is and keep it stocked

What the people nearby do in the first few minutes after an injury can make a big difference. On a jobsite, help can be farther away than you think, and nobody wants to be hunting for gloves or a phone signal while a coworker is bleeding. A little planning now means everyone knows their part before anything happens.

SAFETY MOMENT

September 28

The hazard

What the people nearby do in the first few minutes after an injury can make a big difference. On a jobsite, help can be farther away than you think, and nobody wants to be hunting for gloves or a phone signal while a coworker is bleeding. A little planning now means everyone knows their part before anything happens.

The action

Everyone should know where the first aid kit is, whether it is in the trailer, the truck or the shop. On construction jobs, the kit must be in a weatherproof container and checked before it goes out to each job and at least weekly, so used items get replaced. If you use the last of something, tell your foreman. (29 CFR 1926.50(d)(2))

ASK THE CREW

Where are the first aid kits and eyewash stations on this site, and who keeps them stocked?

From the talk: First aid. Read it in full, free, with the questions and the sign-in sheet.

HOW TO USE IT

How to give a safety moment

  1. Gather the crew where they work, before the shift or the meeting starts. Read the hazard out loud.
  2. Ask the question and let two or three people answer. What they say about their own work counts for more than what you read.
  3. Name the action and point to one place on today's job where it applies, so everyone knows what to do differently.
  4. Write the date and the names on a sign-in sheet.

A safety moment is short and does not replace the full talk. When you want to go through a topic with the crew, pick a free toolbox talk.
