SAFETY MOMENT, JANUARY 14

Cover and mark holes

Safety moment, January 14

Cover and mark holes

Slips, trips and falls happen on every kind of job, not just up high. A fall on a flat floor can still break a wrist, hurt your back or cause a head injury. Spills, cords and clutter are easy to spot and easy to fix if someone takes a minute to deal with them.

The hazard

Slips, trips and falls happen on every kind of job, not just up high. A fall on a flat floor can still break a wrist, hurt your back or cause a head injury. Spills, cords and clutter are easy to spot and easy to fix if someone takes a minute to deal with them.

The action

An open hole is a trip hazard and a fall hazard. On construction sites, workers must be protected from tripping in or stepping into or through holes by covers. Make sure covers are secured and clearly marked, and never lift or move one unless you are told to and the hole is protected. (29 CFR 1926.501(b)(4)(ii))

ASK THE CREW

What will we do differently when it rains, snows or freezes?

From the talk: Slips, trips and falls. Read it in full, free, with the questions and the sign-in sheet.

HOW TO USE IT

How to give a safety moment

  1. Gather the crew where they work, before the shift or the meeting starts. Read the hazard out loud.
  2. Ask the question and let two or three people answer. What they say about their own work counts for more than what you read.
  3. Name the action and point to one place on today's job where it applies, so everyone knows what to do differently.
  4. Write the date and the names on a sign-in sheet.
